Yay babies! I finally get to tell you what I did all day Friday (sorry I missed book club, ladies!). Beth's baby shower in Dallas was Saturday, so I spent Friday making the favors and my gift for her and her baby boy Jude. The favors were seed packets with forget-me-not seeds. They started out as a template that I printed at home and a thousand little seeds in baggies....

And ended up like this! I was really happy with the way they ended up. And all of the guests will have beautiful blue flowers blooming when Jude is born.

I also sewed some gifts up. I made some burp cloths, a cube tag toy that had no pattern, and some Winnie the Pooh baby booties. I can't believe how small they are! What little feet he will have!

We had a good time at the shower and I enjoyed helping plan the party. Can't wait until he's here!

I recently finished reading America's Food: What You Don't Know About What You Eat by Harvey Blatt, and I have to say that it was very eye-opening. To say that today's consumer is divorced from the process of food production is quite the understatement. Blatt began his book by discussing and comparing farming from one to two hundred years ago to farming today, and while I knew that the changes would be drastic, I didn't know in what way. Farming and meat production has gone from many small farms to a few gigantic farms. Subsidies have encouraged the production of only a few kinds of food, and within those, a few varieties of those foods. The number of varieties of foods that have gone "extinct" is astounding! Pesticides are increasingly being found in our groundwater and are being run off into the ocean, killing millions of fish and other sea creatures. He describes how modern food is nutrient deficient with actual numbers to go along with it. Blatt goes through every aspect of our food including soil, organic food, genetically modified food, meat, seafood, fruits and veggies, food processing, and poor eating. One of the things I like most about this book is that it contains everything in one source, and nearly every sentence has a reference to the back with where he got his information from. Unfortunately I didn't mark places where I exclaimed "Holy cow!" after reading something, so you'll just have to read the book yourself. There definitely were countless facts that I learned from this book that had never crossed my mind before, and is definitely changing the way my family will be eating in the future. (I had my first cage-free eggs this morning!) All in all, this book was very informative, I was pleased to see scientific data behind the writing, and I think everyone who eats should read it.

Fun week at CVS! I was actually in Wylie for Beth's baby shower, so my mom and I went to CVS this morning together. I was so excited to get the Dallas Morning News! I don't know if I'm biased because I grew up in the Dallas area, but I firmly believe that the comics in the Dallas paper are much better than in the Austin-American Statesman (sorry, Austin). This week I got:
  • 1 Accu-Check Blood Glucose Monitor, $9.99 with one $2 off $10 FHA-eligible purchase CVS coupon and $9.99 ECBs = profit of $2
  • 2 Scrubbing Bubbles Action Scrubber starting kit, $2.99 each with two $2.75 off internet coupons = $0.48
  • 1 Glade Sense & Spray, $5.99 with one $4 newspaper coupon, one $1 CVS CRT and $1 ECB = free
  • 2 newspapers = $4
  • 2 Paas egg coloring kits, $1.99 each with $1.99 ECBs each = free
I wasn't sure if the FSA-eligible coupon would work since I only bought $9.99 worth of FSA items instead of $10, but it scanned without any problems! The net cost turned out to be $2.63, which is less than the cost of the newspapers. I don't really remember if I ever colored eggs as a kid, so I'm debating whether or not I want to try it this year for fun. We shall see....

I can't work in a quiet room. I know, you would think it would be the opposite, but when the room is quiet, my mind wanders to things non-work related. Which made it hard to work in my office for a while now. I don't have an i-anything to listen to, and I get bored with the same music over and over again. Our computers have Linux on them, and I couldn't figure out how to get radio stations to work on them. This week I found a solution! Last.fm is a free online "radio station" that not only has preset radio stations, but personalizes a radio station for you based on the artists and songs you tell it you like. It will suggest other artists for you and has every song imaginable (at least that I have looked for). You can't fast forward through a song (you can skip, though), so it's not quite like owning the songs, but it is the next best thing that I have ever seen. I feel like I own every song ever written. :) Just thought I'd share in case anyone else has been having the same problem as I have.

By the way, is this not the coolest desktop background ever?
Since the Typepad Connect plug-in didn't work, I decided to re-design. I do not know html, but after a few hours, and after learning a bit of Gimp, this is what I came up with. I'm not sure about the background color, but other than that I think it's good. :) Any suggestions?
I am super excited. I keep seeing these fun widgets on WordPress for threaded comments and whatnot that I didn't think I could use since my blog is on Blogger. But, lo and behold, today Sew Liberated wrote about Typepad Connect that works with Blogger (and it's free)! Now I should have threaded comments.... hopefully it also has the "email further comments" link that I love on others' blogs. Yay!

Update: I must have done something wrong with the html because now there are no comments or post pages. Oops. Working......

Update: I can't get it to work. Apparently others have had this problem too. Does anyone know of any add-ons for commenting that work on Blogger?
